Fate? Chance? God? As we look around at the events of our lives, one of the things we often wonder is if God is somehow present behind the scenes. The temptation, especially when life is difficult and the circumstances of life seem chaotic, is to believe that God is either absent or powerless. Yet the ancient story of Esther invites us to live with a different kind of posture. Throughout the Scriptures we see the theme of people wrestling with time: from the Psalmist asking God to help the people “count their days” (90:12) to the Teacher of Ecclesiastes crying out that all of life is “vanity” and “chasing the wind.” How should we relate to our pasts? What season of life are you in now, and how can you live faithfully in it? As people who pray, “Thy kingdom come,” how do we relate to a future that hasn’t arrived yet?
